Your fasting blood sugar level should never be elevated if you do not have diabetes, as you did not ingest food during your sleep, food is what raises blood sugar levels. Diabetics tend to have higher fasting sugar levels because their body does not utilize their own insulin they produced (some do not even produce insulin). Also they usually ask for a 12 hours fasting sugar, as is the case for many people with diabetes, your sugar rises even more when fasting longer.

If you do not put gas in your car, it cannot run properly, there is only a certain distance you can drive while running low on fuel. It is the same thing with your body, if you do not give it fuel (food), your body will perform at a lower level, so no food intake should mean low sugar levels. So it is not normal to have high sugar levels on fasting blood tests as you did not give your body fuel (food), you should actually be running on low, which is why Breakfast meals are so important, it helps you refuel to be able to go about on your day.

Many other factors come into play. Certain medications can raise blood sugar levels such as steroids. I have been on steroids for 40 yrs on and off because I have Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. So when diagnosed diabetes last summer after a bad fall (while healing sugar levels can go very high. Now that I changed my diet, doctors are decreasing my steroids to eventually stop them, my sugar levels are better. I did also feel better without the diabetic medication because my sugar levels are better controlled. So Endo told me to stop my diabetic medication as I was getting hypos, I stopped for 9 days, but my morning sugars kept going up as I am still on the steroids, Endo stated to only take 1/4 pill instead, then my sugars got better so I tried stopping again, it only lasted 2 days the 2nd time around, but then sugar levels went up again so on day 3 had to go back on it.

Maybe you have managed to decrease your sugar levels to a point were your normal on certain days. Speak with your doctor to know if your dosage needs to be changed or even stopped, but it is up to your doctor to make that call, those 9 days I was starting to feel exhausted towards the end so went back on it. With diet you can manage diabetes for a while, but depending what medication you are on, such as Metformin which takes a while to start seeing numbers going down as it is not a fast acting medication, it also takes a few days or weeks once you stop them for your sugar to go up again. Maybe your dosage needs adjusting or something else. Check with your doctor first discuss how you feel. Or if you have any other diabetic team. Or even check with your pharmacist

Usually, you do not eat 12 hours before the blood test. That is the fasting it is about. When you take your blood sugar at home, it is the first of the day, when you wake up in the morning. As Johanne say, if you did not eat for 12 hours, someone without diabetes would have a normal reading which is under 6mmol or 108mg/dl.

@A DiabetesTeam Member I have just looked @ your profile and see you are diabetic since 2005. Not knowing more information from your diabetes history and medications, I can only go with my story and some of others who have mentioned this also.

I have had abdominal bloating for a few years now myself, many years before being diagnosed with diabetes, I sometimes joke that I am 15 months pregnant or 12... it depends how distended the bloating causes. I also for 53 years had chronic diarrhea then all of a sudden since spring 2018 I now have constipation (up to 5 days without passing anything and when I do finally pass stools they are real hard balls, major change indeed. So I was diagnosed diabetic last summer after a bad fall which caused one of my scrapes on a toe to become an ulcer 2 weeks later. My A1C in June was 11.9, but has come down to 6.5 in March. Yet the abdominal distension (bloating) is getting worse, so since 2 years now my GI doctor been doing all sorts of tests even having a tube down my nose to my stomach for 24 hr which I had to swallow and eat as normal (yeah that was not normal to say the least). So since 2 years also now I have severe nausea retching and stomach pains especially mornings or while passing stools (upper abdomen in stomach area not lower abdomen. Well for a while I though it was because of the Hiatal Hernia that formed in August 2018 when I had a bad pneumonia which kept me off work for 7 months. Doctors have been playing around with my meds, stopped some added others it has been a real roller coaster ride. So there was only 1 test that GI doctor did not send me for as she did not know yet about the diabetes, I asked her if I could have Gastroparesis, and she stated well your diabetes is fairly new so that cannot be the cause as I am well controlled now, but I have had GI issues since birth and I have 18 diseases with no cure and 4 are auto-immune (6 of those diseases were added in the last 2 years alone). So got a call earlier this month from GI doctor to give me results of the test, and I do have Gastroparesis, in my case as she stated it is not diabetic related but from 40 yrs of auto-immune diseases since age 15 I am now 55.

Gastroparesis from diabetes is 1 of the major causes and so is auto-immune diseases, as doctor stated it takes many years being diabetic before developing Gastroparesis. You can look up Gastroparesis online and see if some of your symptoms are similar and maybe discuss with your doctor about having the test, it is an easy test, they feeds you radioactive non iodine substance, then they lie you flat and take special Xrays, then they repeat the test 1 hr after, then 2 hrs after and then 4 hrs after, so I was there 5 hrs because you eat the food in front of them and as soon as you are finished they start the test, no needle involved just food, in my case not being allergic to eggs they gave me eggs and toast with jam. I started a new medication last week and it is helping me so much.
