I do not need dialysis. Kidneys now 50%. My doctor wants plant based vegan diet. I am concerned about nuts, seeds, beans. I have heard they're not good for kidneys. What should I do?
Go Bonkers for Beans
The trick for reaping the most benefit from beans? Pick a rainbow of them. A cup of cooked red kidney beans has about 13 grams of fiber, according to the USDA; a cup of black beans has about 15 grams; white beans, more than 18 grams. In addition to their high fiber content, beans, as well as lentils, have a starch that's resistant to digestion, meaning it doesn’t get into the bloodstream quickly and affect blood sugar, Weisenberger says.
Plus, this starch is good news for good gut bacteria. “When bacteria make a meal of resistant starch, some fatty acids are formed,” she adds. These beneficial fatty acids promote better use of insulin and healthier colon cells. To get more beans into your diet, try tossing them into your favorite salad, soup, or entrée.
I'm in stage 3 CKD and eat pretty much what I want according to a diabetic diet. I'm usually in the 50s as far as my eGfr goes. I do watch things like potassium (tomatoes, avocados, bananas) and try to really limit salt intake. Also, I work hard to keep up the liquid intake. I'm on blood pressure meds, but the nephrologist is satisfied with where I am. Currently I see her once a year.
Tks. Don't really have a dietician. My doctor gives me a plan and steers me to various links. But some say one thing and others are contradictory.
There should be a dietician that your doctor can steer you to. Talk with them about your concerns.
