Possible Causes Of High Morning Blood Sugar Levels ?
A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have been experiencing that my blood sugar levels at night (before going to bed) rapidly changes(increased) in the morning. For example, 7.5 at bedtime (1200AM) , 11.5 at 7-30 AM and 6.2 at bedtime (1200AM) that increases to 9.7 at 7-30 AM . There was no food intake in between bedtime and morning . Can anybody explain what could be the reasons? May be there is a need to change the time of intake of medicines . I usually take greater dose in the morning than in the evening. Does it make sense… read more

My nutritionist said to have a light snack before bed low carb with protein, like a piece of low fat cheese and 2 multigrain crackers. Since I’ve been doing that my fasting bag has gone down 30 points. Also taking Apple cider vinegar before bed is helping me.

If you ever get the chance to take your number in the middle of the night and then in the morning the progression will be more clear. If you are awake and getting low BS you feel it, when your sleeping your body reacts the same way, but you don't get the cues that you could act on. So your liver kicks in and bumps up your falling BS. Last night I was 140 after dinner and new that I would need a snack before bed. I had a small sandwich and some almonds. It just so happens my dogs woke me at 2:30 in the morning. I grabbed my kit and tested. I was 135. When I woke I was 120. So the roller coaster was on the way down. If I hadn't had my snack I would have bottomed out and my liver kicked in and I probably would have been in the 160 to 170 range. It's a fun game. Glad you could join! ;)

The dawn phenomenon is a big problem for me too. I've tried various snacks at night but the results vary so much. I'm getting more success having a higher protein snack and plenty of water.

For me , If I have a snack before bedtime , such as vegies, uncooked for me , the next morning my readings are sometimes right on the button . Seems when you don,t have a snack ( non carb ) your digestive system will take sugar from the stored fat in your body.PS Last night I was hungary, so I figured I was going against the rules, I had a cup of tea and a 12 grain bagel , no sugar , no more sweeteners, just a drop of milk in my tea, this morning my reading was below 5 ( norm is 5.3 ) go figure .You have to keep track of what and when you eat to get some idea of what works best for you.
It,s a pain but it our life now , Good Luck , don,t let it get you down , just keep on keeping on as one of our friends wrote earlier

Have a small snack before bed. About 15 gm carbs and some protein. It usually help keep your sugars level. Like ValMacedo said it is the dawn phenomenon alot of us experience it.
