Uncontrolled. Elevated A1C
A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

My Husband has Type 2 Diabetes. He is very uncontrolled. His sugar stays 300-400. His A1C is 15.7 from a lab draw a month ago. Found out today that he barely takes the Metformin the way it is prescribed due to not eating. He is prescribed Metformin 850mg 2x a Day and Levemir 40 units at bedtime.

Has anybody taken anything similar or have any suggestions on things we can do to turn this around. I really want to get this right no matter what we do. I need him to live a healthier life.

Thanks in… read more

Metformin can certainly upset one's tummy if taken without found. Luckily I am one of those who it doesn't bother. I would suggest just a soda cracker or two when it's taken. I'm not a breakfast eater, but still have to take my Metformin.

My husband numbers are better now, praise God. 122.
I've noticed that low fat milk has 12 grams of sugar and most creamers have high fructose corn starch which is a lot of sugar. I now buy my husband unsweetened almond milk and natural bliss by coffee mate creamer of 5 grams of sugar per 1 teaspoon. Just sharing!! 😁

I think you have to figure out WHY your husband isn't taking his medication and go from there. Is it because he has trouble swallowing pills? Is it because he needs to eat something when he takes them and doesn't want to eat? Is it because he just doesn't want to take any medications at all? Is it because he feels nauseated with it? If you can figure out why he won't take the Metformin you can address the issue. Good luck!

You know the saying , you can take the horse to the water but you can,t make it drink. In so saying , your husband must take responsibility for his situation and condition . You seem like a very caring partener ,he is very fortunate person to have that kind of situation but you have your own health to take care off so you have to comramise , encourage each other , it takes cooperation and a must want to do it . Hope this makes some sense to you both .Good luck to both of you .

Hi ,His One and Only, If hes not taking the medicine right. Have him set watch alarm to remind him to take it. He needs portion control.can you make the food eatsthat is healthy ahead of time .snacks that are healthy for him.if hes not exercising.take walks together as example. That way your watchingthe sugar intake. To find out what food hes needs eat less of or needs to eat something healthier. Does he drink enough water.let me know how it turns out. Has he taken any diabetic classes.or Talk to his dr. On how to mange it better.Hope I helped.or talk to a nutritionist. These are suggestions. He needs to take charge of his health too.so he gets on the right track. Take care.
