Members shared creative and accessible ways to strengthen muscles and prevent pinched nerves beyond walking, with water-based activities like swimming and water aerobics emerging as popular low-impact options that many found easier on joints than land exercises. Several members described weaving movement into everyday tasks, such as doing arm curls with canned goods while putting away groceries, adding extra bends and stretches during laundry, dancing to music at home, and using light dumbbells for targeted stretching. A recurring theme was the importance of finding affordable options through local YMCAs that offer financial assistance, exploring classes tailored to different ability levels, and incorporating core work and balance exercises to reduce fall risk and support long-term joint health.

I add movement to every day activity. For example, when I'm doing laundry I bend and stretch more than I really have to. When I'm putting away groceries I do arm curls with canned goods and bottles of water. I have a membership at my local YMCA...they offer a number of classes to fit every ability level including water exercise. Another thing that I find fun is putting on some music and dancing.

Thank you for that. I too like to put on music and dance. What you do when putting groceries away and when doing laundry is a great idea. What I need to do is checkout the YMCA here and see what they offer because I do like water exercise.

Light weightlifting. Lots of gyms have cable machines and other machines that allow full range of motion lifts. Lightweights don't strain joints and can help with ranger of motion. Also strengthens muscles and building muscle helps burn more calories. Throw in "core work" which helps build strength in areas that are hard to build and also can help your balance. Increased balance means fewer falls later on and fewer broken bones. I think balance work and strength will be stressed more in the coming years for diabetics.
