Do People Think There Is A Connection Between Stress And Depression And Diabetes?
A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

Do people think there is a connection between stress and depression and diabetes? If so, to what extent do you feel the connections exist? My personal feeling is that the connections between these factors may be underestimated. I feel that 50%, and perhaps somewhat more, of the reason for my diabetes, comes from levels of stress and depression. Do others feel the same way? Thank you.

When I'm depressed I eat more which raises my blood sugars cause I usually eat comfort foods. So it all is connected.

Yes. There have been some studies lately and diabetics are much more prone to depression, with depressed people being more likely to be diabetic. The two sort of go together hand in hand. Some of the studies I've seen had some frightening numbers for higher complication rates and self-injury/suicide. We have to find ways to better treat this aspect of diabetic health in the US. Hate to tell everyone this is the case, but as diabetics we need to pay attention to our full health condition, not just a number on a scale. We are all more than just that number!

Your feelings will affect how well you take care of your diabetes. Also, diabetes affects every part of your body and may be the underlying cause of some of your symptoms. Control the diabetes and that should help alleviate some of the depression. You may still have it, but it won't be as bad.

Anyone who doesn't think stress affects diabetes is mistaken. Diabetes in and of itself can contribute to depression. Basically think of the whole disease process. Everything is related, everything affects it. Stress affects sleep which affects depression which affects blood sugars. Nothing stands alone with this disease. Try your best to find a way to reduce your stress, walking more to release the endorphines in the brain which will help with the depression, and turn the cycle around into something positive.
