Weight Gain On Insulin

A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭
Dallas, TX

Has anyone had problems with weight gain on insulin (I take Tresiba)? My doctors said it is an unfortunate side effect of insulin. I work out at the gym 3-4 times a week and still gained weight. Have been watching what I eat and mostly drinking water but still gaining instead of losing or maintaining. Any tips would be appreciated.

Members widely validated the frustrating reality of weight gain while taking insulin, with many reporting gains ranging from 10 to 30 pounds despite regular exercise and careful eating, attributing it to insulin's role as a hormone that promotes fat storage. Several members offered practical strategies including reducing carbohydrate intake, tracking body mass index and clothing fit rather than scale weight alone, combining insulin with medications like Victoza or Ozempic, and adopting whole plant-based diets rich in potatoes, rice, and beans. A recurring theme was the need for self-compassion and persistence, with members encouraging each other to take baby steps, advocate with doctors about the catch-22 of being told to lose weight while prescribed more insulin, and never give up on finding what works for their individual bodies.

YES! Insulin is a fat storage hormone. The more insulin you have in your body, the more insulin resistant you become. Tell your doctors to stop telling you to lose weight in the same breath they are prescribing more insulin!

Are you aware that muscle weighs more than fat? This means that, as you work out and tone, you'll be building muscle and, therefore, weight.

One job of insulin is to metabolize needed glucose.

Another job is to turn excess, read unneeded, carbs into fat stores, to be used in lean times.

Cut the carbs, add fiber, exercise if your doctors allow, stop adding to your fat stores.

It's simple, just not what most people want to hear or do.

Baby steps. I can do baby steps and you can too.

Never give up, never surrender, never ever.
You got this.
Do what's necessary.
Have a wonderful day.

Weight gain with that much gym time may be a result of muscle mass. A better way to figure if weight gain is good or bad is to have the doc calculate your BMI. REmember muscle mass weighs more than fat. How are your clothes fitting? Use that as a guide as well. Don't let number on the scale dictate your life.
