I Have Chronic Kidney Disease And Am Type 2 Diabetic, My Diabetes.
A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

What medicine can I take for my type 2 diabetes since I can't take Metformin due to chronic kidney disease. My last A1C was 8.1.

With kidney disease, the meds you can take are really limited. It gets more limited when you get closer and to stage 5 (I'm at stage 5 and on dialysis already). I'd ask your dr. - I ended up on mealtime insulin & long acting insulin.

Most people are started in metformin. Insulin, there are less side effects, yes low blood sugar is one. Where as with metformin, lots do ok on it, while others get stomach craps, upset stomach, diahrea etc etc. and it can be hard on kidneys - if you have kidney disease, like me, means I can't take most meds

BudWilkinson, I'm new to this disease. Can you explain how insulin is a better option than oral meds? I would think doctors would start with it if there were evidence that oral meds often destroy the pancreas? It seems as if a lot of us have staying off insulin as a goal?

Hi all. Your comments are very helpful. I think we should ask our doctors what's best for us. I have been very ill for awhile and have just been told that I have kidney disease. Was on insulin for sometime but my dr said it causes weight gain which is bad for diabetics. Perhaps he will change his mind once my GP tells him about my kidneys. I am at the bottom of the bucket. I am so tired of feeling tired and ill.
