Members offered varied perspectives to a mother seeking advice on a low-carb diet for her newly diagnosed 12-year-old son with Type 1 diabetes, with some encouraging moderation rather than strict restriction and others supporting the approach while emphasizing the importance of professional guidance. Several members shared practical strategies including cutting back on bread, pasta, and rice while still enjoying potatoes in moderation, sticking to one carb per plate, cooking from scratch to control ingredients, and using resources like an easy-to-read diabetes guide purchased on eBay. A recurring theme was the value of working closely with a dietitian, especially for children whose blood sugar can be unpredictable, and finding a sustainable lifestyle balance that doesn't feel overly restrictive.

I just cut right back on bread, small amounts of pasta and rice. I eat potatoes and everything else. Is it Type 1 or type 2 Diabetes??? I have type 2 I take tablets and losing weight has made a massive difference to my levels, I do not ever eat processed food, I cook everything I eat so I know what is in it plus it tastes better. I may have 1 slice of bread a week if that. Moderation is the key word that way I don't feel as if I am missing any foods. I have chips, instead of crisps I have prawn crackers only not a whole pack as they are big!!!

Its a lifestyle change and I am ok with it so far (12 months on)

If its type 1 I don't know anything about that sorry. I bought an idiots guide to diabetes and easy to read and understand and that was great as all the info is overwhelming this book broke it down. The main thing I stick to as best I can is only 1 carb on a plate at any meal. Hope this makes some sense. Good luck this site is so helpful. xxx

We have seen one & has given us a thumbs up to go for it, as much as it is expensive to maintain. Thanks so much for your insight, much appreciated
