On Metformin For High Blood Sugar, But Experiencing Low Sugars, Too.
A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

I'm struggling to know when to take metformin. Yesterday I took it in the morning without checking my level first. About an hour later, I felt very odd, as if I couldn't stay awake. The same thing happened the morning before, which I fell asleep without checking my sugars first. I just figured I was tired, but in hindsight I was actually falling asleep sitting up and had only been awake for a couple of hours. Anyway, yesterday, when I checked my sugar was 25. I haven't had much experience… read more

I can't speak for anyone else but myself, I take 1000mg metformin with breakfast and another 1000mg with dinner. I always check my blood sugar first thing in the morning before I eat or drink anything. I never miss a dose because it is not like insulin, you need to take your pills the same time everyday. I personally have not had any side effects except some bloating in which case I took some GasX and it went away. My blood sugars have maintained between 70-100 in the morning (depending on what I ate the night before) and 100-130 throughout the day. When reading up and speaking with others seems most have side effects because they did not eat with the medicine or it caused diarrhea because of the release time. Best wishes.

I have the exact same problem you do and I hate taking metformin as well. I will be going back to my doctor office next week to see what I can do to change my habit and better my life as well. I am tired of falling asleep for no reason even if I eat healthy. I don't use salt anymore but I struggle to use sugar because my family does not like to eat certain food that is more healthier.

Could you be sticking your fingers to deep? That only happens when my setting is too deep.

Thanks, Everyone. I, too, feel all pricked out by bed time. Ha. Honestly I've been trying to talk myself out of feeling sorry for myself lately. Yesterday even thinking about checking my sugar made me feel nauseous. My fingers are dotted with little poke specks. I think I'm getting a cold and this is affecting my numbers.

I take two mf with my breakfast and two with my dinner. I try and check my blood sugar before bf two after or before lunch and before I have dinner. Dr told me to check before bed but most of the time I am all pricked out.
