Does Anybody Suffer From Irritable Bowel As Well As Diabetes
A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

Does anybody suffering from diabetes have stomach disorders. I seem to constantly not able to eat most things....I have been diagnosed with IBS and really dont know what to eat anymore.....I have cut out dairy, hardly eat bread, try and eat healthy foods, and try and cut out carbs but sometimes that is the only thing I can eat and that leads to my sugar going up.....any suggestions. I see a number of people are on the banting diet but I couldnt bear to eat the fats in that diet.

Yes! I was suffering from IBS. I found out that due to nerve damage in the stomach; when a diabetic eats, the food lays longer in the belly and intestines. So, now I eat foods I know are easy to diguest and I make sure I drink 8 to 16 ozs. of water after each meal.

Thank you, I am trying to avoid medication except for the dophilius that I take as I think I take enough chemical drugs, but will keep it in mind for the future should the need arise. It comes and goes and sometimes is hardly there at all, at other times the pain is constant. Also not sure whether it is available here in South Africa.

Actually taking 1-2 T of fiber (benefiber or similar) to a hot drink right away each morning really helped. I know my Doc perscribed something to help slow my gut down. That helped also. However fiber is cheap and easy - worked for me. Lettuce and too much sugar would really set me off.

I had been taking meds for IBS for almost 30 years and about 2 months ago starting taking a probiotic with 90 billion culture in it, is a flora something or other, has to be refrigerated, but since starting this probiotic, I have not needed my meds for IBS, its worth a try
