What Is Metformin And How Does It Work?
A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

Metformin is the most common diabetes medication on the planet.

Some hate the stuff, others question it, some can't tolerate it, most of the rest simply take it and get on with their business.

Since just about all of us have at least heard of the stuff, I put together a piece on it to shed some light on this medication.

The source of today’s Metformin is a traditional and natural/herbal remedy that was first medically researched in 1918 - so if you want "natural" this is it.

when I was 8 they tubes from my kidneys to bladder and my bladder to out were to small causes a serious backup of urine into my kidneys. that was surgically corrected but almost killed my kidneys. 17 years ago I was told that my kidneys bleed at a +3 for no apparent reason, but function normally. in 2004 I found out I had angiomloipomas in both kidneys In 2004 they were 1-4mm in 2005 they had grown to 4-5cm. in 2007 they remain the same. my question is: should I even be on the metformin… read more

Had Anyone Had Success With Adding Januvia To Existing Metformin?
A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

My husband was diagnosed several years ago. Had only been on Metformin which kept his numbers under control. Recently his A1C went up to 8.1 Dr has recommended adding 100mg of Januvia once a day. We have a 21 day sample supply. Has anyone had success with adding this drug?

A DiabetesTeam Member

@A DiabetesTeam Member, it depends on what insurance you have. I’m with Ambetter, and my twice daily dose of Janumet, which is Januvia/Metformin combo, costs me $30 a month - my generics are $0.

I Would Like To Know If Any Of You Take Metformin And If So Have You Had Any Side Effects And It Causing Kidney Problems! Thank You 🤗

Meformin
A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi, I just started metformin today. My A1C was 7.1. It's 500mg two pills twice a day. I'm just wondering if this is the norm to start, I have IBS and am nervous. I only took one this morning even though I'm suppose to take two. Anyone else started on two pills twice a day? Thank you.

Metformin is being studied as an anti aging drug and an anti cancer supressor.

Been Type 2 For 8 Years. Up Until Recent Managed To Control It By Diet. Now Been Put Onto Metformin. Very Confused About Side Effects.
A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

I was then put onto slow release tablets but couldn't even swallow them so went back to the original ones. Only taking 1 a day at the moment rather than 2. The more I read about these tablets the more worried and frightened I become.

It's risk versus benefit, my doc says. So there are side effects, but what's the effect of having high blood sugars? Scarier, I'd say.

Januvia?
A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

I was diagnosed with Type 2 a year ago. Doctor started me out on Metformin. In that period of time the dose got up to 2500 once a day, with Victoza added. I was so sick and fatigued I could barely get out of bed everyday. I kept telling my doctor about the fatigue, vomiting, he didn't change my meds. I found another doctor who recognized my adverse reactions to the drugs, and took me off of them.. Now I am on 100 mg of Januvia daily... so far no bad side affects. My AIC is 5.8. Is anyone else on… read more
