Does The Heat Mess With Our Blood Sugar?
A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

We have had a number of minor discussions in the gang here and we have a ton of antidotal evidence and first hand accounts claiming that particularly during the hot summer months, we, as a group, tend to experience a few more challenges keeping our blood sugar in check.

Heat messes with me all the way around lately, and we (southern California) haven't been tested as badly as the east coast has (yet). To avoid a hospitalization, Hydration is KEY. Also, avoid heavy meals and soda--these tend to be high in salt/sodium and will sap your hydration, affecting your entire body's functions.

I never thought about it as until April I have worked in both all four seasons. I am now a stay at home wife and being in south California I have noticed my morning numbers are horrible. But getting out and moving around brings them back down. I have been walking 2-4 miles a day for the last couple weeks now.

I live somewhere were pretty much everyone has central air now. My sugars do run a little higher in summer because watermelon is in season and I eat more of it than I should. When we lived in Oregon though, we did not have air conditioning and If it got over 95, I would turn into a total sloth. For me it may be the total lack of activity, that drives it up during heat.
