When a drug is studied it is done so if 3 phases.
In the first two it has to be shown that it won't kill anyone (or really mess them up) and that it provides some value.
If it meets the first hurdles then a Phase 3 trial will be undertook with a “hand picked” larger group.
Over the past few decades the litany of lawsuits has meant that even a hiccup or a hangnail is recorded as a possible side effect and they are rated with an incidence percentage (eg. 5% of users experienced heartburn (or… read more
@A DiabetesTeam Member I totally understand your concerns and I myself take a statin.
I guess for me it comes down to rather chancing muscle damage (to my doctors credit within the first 3 months of being on Lipitor my Doc ordered a Creatine Kinease test which checks for muscle damage - none noted) and "maybe kidney damage" because the alternative - untreated high cholesterol "does result" in heart attack, stroke, arteriolosclerosis, dementia and damage to kidneys.
So I would rather try to prevent the damage that is known on the "path I was on" - I had high cholesterol and high blood pressure - not medicating would be like saying "I would rather die from a heart attack or stroke" then "chance" an adverse reaction from a drug that could be discontinued the moment a problem arose.
Mute point - we have to make our own decisions but we also have to live with the consequences of those decisions. As long as we understand the pro's/con's of either doing or failing to do something then at least our choice is "informed".
Good for you.
I had very high numbers. I am 74 years old and finally I am now on a very small amount of insulin just at bedtime. It is really working for me. My numbers are the best they have ever been. hope you guys are all good
Excellent perspective @A DiabetesTeam Member, as I am the ultimate side-effect wimp trying to avoid all big Pharma drugs but of course now I have to do what I have to do. I'm still afraid of taking Crestor or any statin but we've had that conversation before here about high cholesterol. I had researched that some consumers what the black box warning on statins since “However, a number of studies have linked the drugs to an increased risk of potentially serious injuries, including muscle damage, kidney problems and diabetes.” https://www.aboutlawsuits.com/fda-rejects-call-... Thanks for posting really helpful info.
Well said. I look at it as everything we do in life had side effects. Neuropathy is a side effect of uncontrolled diabetes. Auto accident of driving a car. Drowning from swimming etc. So you have to choose what you feel is best for you. I choose to chance the side effects of cance and had chemotherapy and radiation which left me with a cronic ringing in the ears. Life was worth the side effect.
