Type 2 Combined With Severe Acid Reflux & Other Gastric Issues
A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am a type 2 diabetic and I am still struggling to keep my A1C where it belongs. However, it has become even more complicated as my ENT doctor says I have reflux, which is affecting my vocal chords (and I'm a teacher so....). I also have gastritis, diverticulosis, and IBS-D. The gastro put me on a low FODMAP diet, but it is confusing, and combining it with the diet for the other conditions and my diabetes is SOOOOOOOO confusing. I am at a loss as to how to blend all these conditions. One d… read more

I so understand your dilema, I have 18 diseases with no cure, many of them GI issues since birth. I have 5 autoimmune diseases also. When I was diagnosed diabetic in August 2019 I struggled so much as I was still working as a dialysis nurse and we often went 5 to 6 hours without eating, I would get hypos and almost passed out. They had given me Metformin and I did not tolerate it the 1st 6 weeks having diarrhea trying to keep hydrated, so Endo doctor switched me to another combined drug and that landed me in ER 1 week later severly dehydrated with gastritis and severe diarrhea which I was taking 6 paclets a day of rehydration salts to keep working, my kidneys were shutting down also and my heart had changes on ECG, so took 13 hrs before my kidneys started working but concentrated urine, took 23 hrs for them to work enough to get our of hospital as they hydrated me with 2 bgs of 1 L each. I got depressed as after that bout I never did return to work as I had applied for retirement for March 2020 (this was planned before the diabetes as my other health issues were acting up. I started a diabetic diet but only got worse, little did I know I also had autoimmune gastroparesis at the time. I joined this group mid Oct 2019 and someone in here mentioned gastroparesis to me and doctor tested me in March 2020 and it was positive. So for the 1st 53 yrs of my life I had chronic diarrhea, then all of a sudden I became constipated and still deal with this issue due to gastroparesis and I am 56 yrs old now. I ended my nursiong career while on sick sorting out many other health issues and finding out many more. So I tried different diets, the only thing which works for me is Keto friendly foods, not the diet as it is too restrictive at 20 Carb, even for diabetic Keto is recommneded at 50 Carbs, I take in around 100 Net Carbs, very modified diet which I alternate from whole grains to white breads and so on. Just had to change my diet a bout 2 weeks ago as since April I had gained back 10 lbs, just lost 5 now in the last 12 days, so the new changes are working. It is a constant up and down especially the 1st year you are figuring out what works best for you. I no longer eat rice, nor pasta, I eat breads alternating and at times I treat myself to chips but do not eat potatoes. I do Carbs counting. Diabetes is not a 1 size fits all diet wise as our metabolism and our pancreas are at different stages. I had to test often to find which foods help me, I wear a Libre as I get frequent hypos and have been off diabetic medications since May 28th 2020. You will learn a lot from this group, adopt 1 food or another from what people tell you and make your own diet if need be. The Keto foods at 100 Carbs works for me and is helping my autoimmune diseases also.
