A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi had medical review recently and my doc mentioned my triglycerides is way off the charts and that causes me to have high sugar level. Daily readings about 9. Ive just start with Statin how long before I see some regular readings for my sugar?

Prayers up, diabetes does have its ups and downs at times. Hope you feel better soon. Metformin does not lower sugar levels as per say, what it does is try and help your body better utilize the insulin you produce naturally, it also tries and stop the liver from dumping its stored sugar into the bloodstream. Over time some people need to switch over to insulin, it may not have anything to do with your diet as per say, just that the disease itself progresses over time, People think if they go on insulin it is something they did wrong, but in many cases it is just the normal progression of the disease itself.

I am on metformin have been for past 12 years - like today I really haven’t had anything sweet , starchy just clear soups . I know my readings have been way off for a few months most due to diet and things I eat and drink. Hopefully next few days I see some drop in my reading

Statins are to reduce cholesterol, I do not believe they reduce sugar, but rather when your sugars become better control your triglycerides improve and so do the rest. What diabetic medication do they have you on ?

My triglycerides were high when I was diagnosed and without any medications for the lipids profiles, just diabetic medications and dietary changes, my triglycerides were back to normal. I am also off all diabetic medications now as my dietary changes worked very well. The statins will help lower cholesterol. But better sugar control will lower the triglycerides. I managed to lower my triglycerides within 7 months without statins & after 9 months I was off all diabetic medications. I hope you will start feeling better soon. Just remember it took years to become diabetic, it will not change overnight, but things can improve with dietary changes for the most part.
