I had untreated hypothyroid for many years. I knew there was a thyroid issue, but 45 years ago I wasn't really told what this meant. They just handed me a prescription and didn't really give me any more information. When I Iost the prescription, since it hadn't made much difference in how I felt, I didn't pursue it further. I didn't see a dr on a regular basis over the years until a medical emergency in 2014. If I had, I might not have diabetes now. Water under the bridge. Last fall, my calcium spiked to 11.1 and my Dr ran a PTH (parathyroid function) test. It was also high. Since pth is supposed to regulate calcium, they're not supposed to be high at the same time. Now I see the endocrinologist every 6 months to monitor things. My calcium has always been in the high 9s and sometimes over 10, but now they check the parathyroid too. If your calcium isn't running high and you feel ok, you probably don't need to worry. It may eventually lead to surgery if it's determined that one or more of the parathyroids is misbehaving (there are 4 embedded in the lobes of the thyroid).
Hypothyroid is one of the reasons I have diabetes. I take 125 mg Synthroid first thing every day. Being monitored now for hyperparathyroid issues (high calcium, high pth).
Sandy, did your specialist put you on a RX for thyroid?
