I am very new to diabetes. I was just diagnosed in December. I am still waiting on a referral to see an endocrinologist. So in the meantime, I am needing to self-educate.
Here is my question:
In the mornings, I have to take my thyroid medicine a half hour to an hour before eating. Should I do my blood sugar before I take my thyroid medicine? Or is it ok to wait until just before breakfast? I am not sure what type of impact that medicine might have on my blood sugar. Is there any place… read more
I too am on thyroid meds .I am not sure if it matters but always check my sugar before meds.
The thyroid medicine has to be taken a half hour to an hour before eating. Since I have trouble with my thyroid numbers, I have to take it an hour before eating or taking other meds.
Anyway, when I went to the endo the other day, she said that the thyroid medicine doesn't affect the blood sugar. So I can take it either before or after. It doesn't make a difference. The one thing she did point out is that if I take over the counter vitamins, they should be taken 6 hours after the dose of my thyroid medicine. This was something that I hadn't heard in all my years of hypothyroidism.
Can you take the measurement a time or two both before the thyroid medicine and just before breakfast? If there's not much difference, either time should be fine.
I've not heard that about vitamins before either.
Recently, I read that at least one type of thyroid medicine should not be taken with milk, since milk interferes with absorbing all of it.
My endo said to take my thyroid medicine about two hours before any of my other morning medicines, and also about two hours before breakfast.
In my last 17 years as diabetic type 2 , I have had learned 1st of all check my blood sugar level, count my intake carbs my pump' s meter will indicates how many units then breakfast which is my main meal then take my narco & regular meds, since mine condition, only time I fast for a1c, or any other lab test, but no empty stomach.
While you are waiting I would ask your pharmacist. They know more then some Dr's. It can't hurt
